The major ocean currents are caused by wind and the rotation of the earth. Tidal currents alternate direction and vary in speed, slowing to almost zero as the tides reach their highest and lowest points. The best time to plan a dive is normally just before slack high tide.<\/p>\n<p>Tidal currents are most common where there&#8217;s a relatively contained area like a bay with an opening to the sea to create a strong water flow.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Offshore currents<\/strong><\/em> are large-scale permanent currents caused by the earth&#8217;s rotation, prevailing winds, and the heating and cooling of water. Offshore currents can cause an upwelling. This excess water will tend to flow back to the open water via the route of least resistance, often between two sandbanks or shallow areas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This can cause a strong current, away from the shore. When caught in a rip current you should avoid swimming against the current. These currents can occur near vertical surfaces like cliffs or seamounts.<\/p>\n<p>When caught in a downcurrent, stay calm and swim away from the wall to escape the current&#8217;s strongest flow. Inflate your BCD slightly but avoid over-inflating.
